Arch Rock (click to enlarge)

Arch Rock is close to Atlatl Rock and is right off the main road within the Valley of Fire state park.  I included it not only because of its natural beauty, but because of the ancient rock art it houses.  While petroglyphs (etchings in the rock face) are quite common in the Valley of Fire and surrounding areas, pictographs (“paintings” with natural pigments) are much rarer in this area, especially on the natural red Aztec sandstone.  Arch Rock has some pictographs that have been preserved over the centuries, due to being sheltered from the weather.  If you look closely, there were many more pictographs that have faded over the years.  I’ll eventually enhance the pictures in the future, to draw out these older, more faded drawings.
