The Mojave National Preserve is rich with volcanic activity. There are old volcanoes, cinder cones and lava fields located everywhere. In this particular location, a while back someone anchored a steel ladder in the hole, so you can easily get down in the lava tubes and explore. There are spots where you need to get on your hands and knees to crawl through openings, so gloves and knee-pads will make it more comfortable. Also, a headlamp is a necessity for going deeper into the tube.
