The transition point in the rocks, from gold to red (click to enlarge)

Calico Basin is located in the La Madre Mountains, close to, but just outside of the Red Rock National Conservation Area.  I’ve also seen this area and trails called Kraft Mountain (due to the name of the mountain) and Gateway Canyon.  The rock formations and colors in the rocks are stunningly beautiful.  You’ll see gold-colored transition to bright, deep reds, stripes, swirls, etc.  Really awesome geology throughout this area.  And, keep an eye for some petroglyphs and agave roasting pits, they’re scattered around, too.
