Coyote Gulch is a small side canyon containing a handful of petroglyphs.  The location is near Black Canyon and Inscription Canyon in the Black Mountain Wilderness Area and Opal Mountains.  There aren’t many petroglyphs located here, but the few that do exist contain some very nice ancient rock art examples.  It’s also a great area for hiking, camping and off roading.

About 25 years ago, I went camping with a guy who knew the desert well and did a lot of off-roading and we spent the night in Coyote Gulch. I was going through a divorce and really needed the companionship. My friend Steve really snored and so in the middle of the night, I got up, put on my boots and dragged my sleeping bag so far away I could barely see him. His big, furry dog followed and lay down next to me. About an hour later I found out why Coyote Gulch was so named. I have never, never heard so many coyotes in my life. I speculated there were 10,000, but it was just speculation. God, they were they loud. Fearing an attack on either the dog or me, I grabbed the dog’s collar and “slept” like that, with my hand looped inside his collar, the entire night. We both woke up in the morning thoroughly alive but completely exhausted. OK , at least I was exhausted. A sweet memory of a time with Steve.. RIP, Steve.
