Despite it’s ominous sounding name, Death Valley contains some of the most beautiful and pristine scenery in the American West.  This gallery has some miscellaneous pictures from different areas in and around the park.  To view specific locations & pictures within Death Valley, please peruse my galleries.

The park itself is HUGE, covering over 5,200 square miles, with plenty of areas outside the park boundaries to explore, too.  I truly love this area, each time I visit it’s different than the last.  You could spend decades exploring the park and still not visit every canyon, peak, etc.

Death Valley is often referred to as a land of extremes:
– Lowest place in North America  at 282′ below sea level, but surrounded by mountain peaks as high as 11,000′ (Telescope Peak)
– Hottest temperatures on record (134-degrees Fahrenheit), but freezing temps in the winter with snow-capped peaks well into late spring
– Less than 4″ rain annually, but not immune to flash floods
– Often thought of as barren, but has awe-inspiring springtime wildflower “super blooms”

You could spend a lifetime exploring this area, so don’t let the name (or reputation) keep you away.  If you’re well prepared beforehand and don’t go out in the middle of summer, you should be fine.  Once you visit, you’ll want to return again & again…Death Valley will stay on your mind.
