The Mojave National Preserve is rich with volcanic activity.  There are old volcanoes, cinder cones and lava fields located everywhere.  In this particular location, a long time ago, someone anchored a steel ladder going down into a lava tube, making it easy to explore.  There are spots where you need to get on your hands and knees to crawl through smaller openings (further into the tube), so gloves and long pants will make it more comfortable.  Also, a headlamp is a necessity for going deeper into the tube.
