The dry, salt-encrusted basin near Mesquite Flat makes up a large, dry lake bed in the amazing Death Valley area.  This basin is surrounded by mountains on all sides, which make for a dramatic landscape.  This playa is one of several located all throughout the American Southwest. When enjoying these areas, please keep your vehicle on approved tracks, so as not to harm the landscape.  After rains these areas can turn into temporary lakes, so it’s best to wait for them to dry out before visiting.  And, do not drive your vehicle across the mud, this can permanently scar and harm the desert floor.  On the far end of the basin are the beautiful Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.
