Oak Springs Trilobite Area is located off HWY US-93, about 12 miles from Caliente, NV.  It resides at about 5,800′ in the Burnt Springs range (near Oak Springs summit).  The BLM manages this area and they maintain a very accessible trail, parking lot, maps and picnic tables.  Like everything else in this area, the scenery and surrounding landscapes are breath-taking.  There are a large exposed shale areas full of trilobite fossils.  You can feel free to dig and take what you find (I haven’t had any luck, but supposedly others have).  I’m guessing that most of the exposed shale on top has been picked over already.  So, you’ll probably need to dig down a foot or two (bring a shovel and/or pick).  When I’ve been there, some folks have left hammers and chisels for others to use at the sign-in register.  But, you can’t count on those being there, so make sure you bring your own tools (and gloves!).  Regardless if whether you find anything or not, I believe just being outdoors in this area is the true treasure.
